2007 harvest manage to cover national needs

During the opening of the regional forum of centre Wilayas, agriculture minister Mr. Saïd Barkat revealed that preliminary estimations mention that Algeria wheat harvest for 2007 is to cover national needs assessed at 60 million quintals.

Agriculture minister said the season is the best one since the independence in terms of production quality. He pointed out that Algeria has realised recently a considerable breakthrough as during the 90s the average production rates were estimated at 19 million quintals while it exceeded 32 million quintals during the five last years.

Concerning how the production is to be conserved, Barkat stated that his ministry has taken a series of measures namely easing the access of farmers to wheat cooperatives. He added that agriculture ministry decided to increase wheat prices in order to encourage producers.

On another side, as Bouira wilaya has recorded the higher rates in terms of production, the minister answered many demands addressed by the prefect « wali » during his intervention, calling to the creation of an institute of agricultural harvest, a wholesale market and a wheat group.
