Algeria expressing reservation on the US “Africom” project

Africa undertakes by herself her security issues

Algerian officials who met with the US principal deputy under secretary of Defense for policy Rayan Henry Sunday have shown reservations as regards the establishment of a US commandment in Africa meant to spare the US interests in the continent from terrorist threats through

stranglehold terrorist groups affiliated to al Qaeda. The US delegation headed by Rayan Henry pursues its mission in the framework of the enlarged Pentagon consecration with « key African countries » military and political officials on “Africom” issue.

Well informed sources told El Khabar that Algerian officials conveyed the message to their US counterparts that Algeria prefers Africans to take in charge their security and defense issues including counter-terrorism efforts within the AU structures.

Algeria Press Service reported that an official source revealed that Algeria stand falls within principles of the foreign policy, which means that the matter is related to which extent the US project can respect the sovereignty of each African country.

According to that source, officials who met the US delegation talked about « efforts the AU deploys in order to build on the common security at the continental level in conformity with the Constitutive Act and the Pact for non aggression and common defense », which mirrors Algeria reservation.
