Syrian security services arrested 40 Algerians

Suspects of being recruited in Fath al Islam

Syrian security services arrested yesterday 40 Algerians by their arrival to the Syrian territories by road and air, they have been led to “Palestine intelligence center” in the capital Damascus for inquiries, while two young Algerians died in cloudy circumstances.

According to Syrian authorities, the arrest falls within measures aimed at preventing Algerians joining Fath al Islam in Lebanon. Syrian security authorities intensified Algerians arrest campaign after being notified by the presence of a “recruitment network for jihad in Fath al Islam through Syria”.

In this regard, the official in charge of information at Algeria foreign affairs ministry Mr. Chikhi stated “available information about the issue are positive”, adding, “there are 9 Algerian detainees in Syria, as confirmed by consular affairs officials” who are following the issue developments “in the framework of their activity to protect Algerians abroad”.

Today 7 detainees are to be released while two others are to remain for investigations. On another side, the official in charge of consular affairs in Algeria embassy in Damascus has visited the detainees in investigations centers.
