Sonatrach purchases Chateau Neuf Hotel in Oran

Considered as a threat to an Ottoman era castle

Oran Province has officially accepted to sell the frame of Chateau Neuf Hotel for the state-owned oil company Sonatrach, Oran Province Governor told El Khabar, assuring however archaeological monuments’ defenders that “the Castle of the Dey” is to be protected.

He has not disclosed any further information about the financial deal.

Theses statements have put an end to speculations over Chateau Neuf Hotel fate which construction works have stopped since the 80s because it is located in the middle of a historical castle yard that remotes back to the Ottoman era called “Castle of the Dey”. In this context Oran Governor mentioned that the Castle is to be carefully renovated.

Resuming the construction works of Chateau Neuf Hotel is to clear up Oran’s urban environment from a dark point. As a matter of interest, while visiting Castle of the Dey monument the French TV journalist and writer Patrick Poivre D’arvor commented: “if I were a terrorist, I’d bomb this concrete frame,” meaning the frame of Chateau Neuf Hotel which distorted the historical monument of “Castle of the Dey”.
