European campaign accusing Algeria of religious freedoms persecution European campaign accusing Algeria of religious freedoms persecution

Sunday Apr 13 2008.

A campaign has been launched once more against Algeria, similar to the one bearing the slogan “who killed who,” a few years ago.

The campaign is relying on letters, newspapers items, E-mails, and other mass media channels, targeting the corporate image of Algeria. The majority of these channels are branding the “religious freedoms suppression,” particularly after a new law related to religions practices, has entered into force, while some people preaching for Christianity have been brought into court recently in some regions nationwide.

According to the Spanish media which has approached the issue, the campaign has been launched from France, so some events will beheld, papers’ items are scheduled to be edited, while large scale exhibitions will be organized, demonstrating against “the religious freedoms violations in Algeria,” as they are pretending. So the campaign is Spain, has initiated by the condemn of the violations as the media said, and especially by El Pais, one of the most learned newspapers, which has edited a long item last Feb.27 issue bearing the title “ Algeria persecutes Christians.” The item has reported the cases of people who have been prone to this alleged “persecution,” relying on sources close to churches, without reporting any Algerian official opinion about the issue.

In this regard, the Embassy of Algeria in Madrid has received written letters enquiring about the “persecution”. The Embassy response has been mocked by numerous Spanish media. The Spanish organization “express your mind” has indicated that the Algerian embassy has called on El Pais newspaper editing the Algerian ambassador response concerning the news items published by this latter, but the newspaper has refused to do so.
