Yet, Algeria is to partake in this brigade with two army troops and a military police one, while Egypt is to host the headquarters of it. However, Morocco has boycotted the Brigade, for its membership in the African Union is still hung.

The second Northern Africa’s defence ministers’ meeting held Monday in Tripoli, Libya, has witnessed the participation of delegations representing Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia and African Union Commission. The attendees have agreed on regional training plan and the amended regulation planning components, administrative structures and rules related to the Military Standby Brigade of North Africa region, regulation of the Executive Secretariat and budget for 2009. Algeria has been chosen to host African Union’s Standby Brigade training base, which is likely to be assigned to the Inter Arms Military Academy in Cherchel, western Algiers. Algeria has further decided engaging three squads in the Brigade, of which two are from army forces and the third one from military police.

To recall, ASF brigades are to be deployed in northern Africa region, while the mission assigned to it is to maintain peace in borders, in view of avoiding the internalization of Africa’s internal issues, as it has been the fact with Darfour issue.
