The meeting is being held from yesterday in the headquarter of the general leadership of the NATO in Brussels. This meeting is part of periodic meetings which are usually held to evaluate and search horizons for developing dialogue process, started between NATO and Mediterranean nations in 1995, and Algeria has joint it in 2000. This meeting is part of the dialogue that exists between NATO and its different partners in the Mediterranean region; this dialogue aims at enhancing the new tendency adopted by the organisation in its relations with the region’s countries in order to contribute in the maintenance of peace, and to reach a reciprocal understanding between the two sides of the Mediterranean Sea. The meeting aims at changing existing views about this organisation (NATO), views which are adopted by the participant Mediterranean countries, and this trough developing the transparency and reinforcing trust and this by enlarging cooperation and partnership possibilities. In addition to Algeria, six countries participate in the dialogue between NATO and the Mediterranean countries, which are Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, Jordan and Israel. This dialogue is based on three axes: Defence, development, and democracy, and these are the principles that the Atlantic organisation is trying to make a concrete reality on the ground and this through giving the seven participant Mediterranean countries a chance to participate in the activities and programmes which were kept so far open only for the member states and the countries participating in the peace process. In a practical terms, the most important programmes that have been performed is the “Active Endeavour” programme that saw its first start after the 9/11 events, and is considered one of the most important programmes in terms of fighting terrorism in the Mediterranean region. This programme is focused on the prevention and detection of terrorist activities in the Mediterranean region, and focused too on intelligence exchanges between the concerned parties.
