“We reject aggravating escalation with Rabat” “We reject aggravating escalation with Rabat”

Tuesday Jan 06 2009.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mourad Medelci, has rejected opening a new political escalation dispute front with Rabat, while saying that “statements of Moroccan officials, recently on Algeria, have driven the situation up to an exceeded level, on which I prefer to make no comment.”

Mourad Medelci further added that any additional comment from him would likely to aggravate the current escalation characterizing the charged atmosphere between the two countries. However, he indicated that Algeria’s position towards Moroccan authorities is bound to respect.

Yet, he announced the existence of evidences that Rabat violates human rights in Western Sahara, adding that such evidences are mentioned in a report that UN Secretariat General conceals since 2006. In this context, Medelci said the new personal envoy of UN Secretary General in the Western Sahara, namely Christopher Ross, is to arrive to the region, as soon as he is appointed.

On another side, Medelci told Algeria’s International Radio Channel that Algeria’s Ambassador to Mali, Abdelkrim Ghrib, has held a mediation peace meeting, yesterday, in Kidal, northern Mali, between Mali’s Government and Tuareg rebels. However, he has criticised the leader of Tuareg Coalition for Change, Brahim Bahanaga, following the latter’s boycott to the mediation peace talks, adding such a move is not new, as Bahanga is known by not respecting his commitments when it comes to peace dialogue.”
