Widespread response from the vets and secondary school teachers Widespread response from the vets and secondary school teachers

Strike of public service employees
Wednesday May 10 2006.

The rate of response to the strike organized by public service trade unions yesterday within different sectors, like education.

Health and the administration, was varied, meanwhile the rate of participations was huge in high schools comparing to primary and intermediate schools, taking in consideration the mobilisation that was performed by the National Council of secondary and technical teachers and the Council of Capital’s high schools, even it didn’t reach the rate achieved in the previous strike. The participation was between 90% and 95% between the vets and the paramedics, while the participation didn’t go beyond the 30 within the administration.

Public service trade unions have estimated the response to the strike by 60%, most of it in the education sector. However, representatives from trade unions which form “The Board Of Function Service Trade Unions” that has started its strike yesterday, have accused the branches of trade unionists part of General Union Of Algerian Workers of trying to break the strike by being a part of a coalition with the administration within hospitals and public administrations considering the modest participation that was registered amongst employees during the morning, especially within the public administration and health sectors, contrary to the education sector which saw a substantial participation, even that wasn’t as expected, because of the mobilisation that was performed by the council of high and technical schools’ teachers and the council of the capital’s high schools, and also due to the state of mobilization that remained amongst the teachers as a residue of the previous strike which took place on the 23rd and 24th March 2006.

Speaking on the behalf of the council of the capital’s high schools, Mr Benkhatta has explained that the rate of participation in yesterday strike shown no big difference from the previous strike, and the lack of understanding amongst few teachers of the format of adherence to one board of public service trade unions has relatively a negative result.

And speaking on the behalf of the vets’ trade union and the employees of the public administration, its general secretary Kaddour El-hachemi said that the rate of the participation in the strike went beyond the 80%.
