Food stuff, over 17% of Algerian imports

The invoice of food remains very high because it is noted that Algeria imported with an average exceeding the three billion of dollars per year

And this since 2002, to reach last year the equivalent of 3.58 billion of dollars and 1.48 billion of dollars during the first five months of the current year. This confirms the dependency of Algeria with regard to the foodstuffs in the absence of a national production able to replace the imports which come more the share of time from the European Convention country.

The invoice of food, according to the figures of the Customs, is mainly made up of imports of grains, estimated these the first five months at more than 500 million dollars, at the moment when they were considered the year last at 1.44 billion of dollars, into important more than 8 million tons of grains, Algeria had adopted plans and programmes of agricultural support with an aim of increasing the local production and of decreasing the imports on the one hand and of encouraging exports of another one, the foodstuffs and agricultural remain always very modest and do not meet the needs of the Algerian market.

Thus we will notice that Algeria always imports great quantities of milk and its derivatives, estimated the first five months of the current year at 300 million dollars, while they have reached in 2005 the equivalent of 743.57 million of dollars, nearly 288 thousand tons of milk and its derivatives were imported.

In the third position, with imported foodstuffs, come sugar and its derivatives with a value exceeding the 185 million dollars against 293.81 million dollars with an importation of more than one million of tons in 2005. Imports of the meats know from a year to another one an increase their value reached during the first five months 40 million dollars against 220.99 million dollars for last year, Algeria has imported more than 95 thousand tons of meats, especially in the month of Ramadan.

The imports of coffee and tea reached the 60 million dollars for the same period, the first five months of the current year, while they were last year of 144.43 million dollars with 133 thousand tons.
