Riots in Tiaret : One killed, 34 injured and 67 arrested Riots in Tiaret : One killed, 34 injured and 67 arrested

Monday Jul 03 2006.

For the third day, tension and anger are still prevailing in the various districts of the town of Kseur Challala, in Tiaret, where the protest has become stronger, mainly in the city center.

Riots caused, so far, the killing of a 40-year-old man and the wounding of 34 people. Some 37 have been arrested. Rioters destructed and burned down many local infrastructures.

Over 300 young men from the district of Kseur Challala regrouped, on Saturday, in the streets and marched, carrying national flags, towards the western outlet of the town. They stopped near the building of the local security department, where they blocked and barricaded the road linking the town to Tiaret city center, using burning tyres. Antiriot police then intervened using their sticks.

However, the rioters persisted blocking the road standing in the way of the road users. The cars were obliged to park far from the town and pedestrians to trace their steps. The furious young men requested the release of all the arrested, shouting against the local authorities, and insisting on the departure of the Chiefs of the mayor and the chief of the daira (subdivision made up of a number of municipalities).

The protesters are accusing local authorities of not meeting their claims, they rose many months ago. Among other claims, they request public lighting, water and gas supplying. Negotiations took place between demonstrators’ representatives and the prefect of Tiaret, but riots carried on at the end of the meeting.
