The agreement intervenes after a visit of the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry and Minister of the Canadian Commission, Mr. Shock Strall; it will allow making enter the Canadian cows to Algeria, which will be mainly directed to consumption. The Canadian responsibles have expressed in an official statement their satisfaction concerning the entry of Canada in the Algerian market, what gives additional chances to the Canadian producers, adding that this kind of agreements represent an opportunity to the Canadian exporters specialized in the cows’ breeding and it is a proof of the confidence granted to Canadian industry. The official statement has indicated that Algeria has decided to suspend its Canadian meat imports after the discovery of the first case of mad cow in May 2003, and that the new agreement requires to provide an export licence of Canadian living cows towards Algeria, knowing that the first decision of Algeria, after having learned the existence of case of mad cow in Canada, was to suspend the importation of 600 head. It should be noted that the Canadian authorities have undertaken, at the beginning of the current year, efforts to convince the Algerian part to raise the embargo on the Canadian cows. A mission of the sector of agriculture and Canadian food industry of the North of Africa, headed by the Assistant Vice minister, Andrew Marseland, in company of four employees of the Canadian organization and 12 representatives of companies and organizations in the field of food industry, carried out between the 14 and January 16 a visit punctuated by meetings with the General Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Abdesselem Chelghoum, and the Trade Minister, Mr. Hachemi Djâboub. Algeria has always tried to diversify its supply by having recourse to the meats of the Latin America; it has imported more than 40 thousand tons of Brazil and the countries of the Latin America in addition to the European countries as regards the raw meats.
