Constitutional revision is to crown a deep rooted political change Constitutional revision is to crown a deep rooted political change

Mehri comments current issues
Thursday Sep 21 2006.

Former national liberation front Secretary General, Mr. Abdelhamid Mehri said the constitutional revision is a necessary claim, but it is due to crown a deep and comprehensive political change.

In his opinion national reconciliation is lacking a political trend, and called to lift it out from the emotional concept to a political one. Moreover, he spelt out his deep concern over recent Pope’s Statements.

In Mehri’s opinion, national reconciliation project has a positive aspect, namely crisis humanitarian and social impact relief, the charter even refers to the ongoing approaches as well as political options that allowed managing the crisis, but peace law shrinks research scope and incriminates those who analyse crisis’ roots otherwise.

As for constitutional revision, there’s no need to recall the endeavour’s paramount importance, but the issue is tackled on speculations and probabilities’ ground that cannot fuel a deep debate likely to constitute a prelude to a good constitution up to allow facing Algeria’s domestic and external challenges. As regards presidential terms opening, Mehri views it as a partial issue that can have accordingly positive or negative dimensions. It depends on the global political context, and the changes it bares for a quantum social shift.

Regarding Pope Statements, he personally views them as faults aiming at exacerbating xenophobia feelings and religious conflicts to overshadow the real faults, in other terms, the great faults underpinning Islamic and Arab world-oriented western policies. Yet, the question to be raised is: what are these statements’ impact on Christians and western public opinion?

This is the most dangerous aspect of the matter, the statements are meant to fuel prejudice against Islam, and compel, eventually, the western public opinion to adopt systematically clash of civilisations thesis.
