The Algerian, who helped Tunisians join the GSPC, in prison The Algerian, who helped Tunisians join the GSPC, in prison

He was the link between Al Qaeda in Iraq and Arab fighters
Monday Sep 25 2006.

The prosecutor of the Republic of Sidi Mhamed Court has recently remanded a person in custody in Serkadjie prison.

The man was accused of recruiting people for fighting in Iraq and for helping foreigners join terrorist fiefdoms in Algeria. On information obtained by the prison security services, a network, specialised in dispatching fighters to Iraq via Syria, was dismantled.

The man in question is known as “Abu Alhammam” who leads an organisation, the activity centre of which is in Syria. It used to provide shelter for Arab fighters wishing to join Iraqi battle fields. Abu Alhammam had a contact in Syria with a man called “S.M” from the southern part of the capital. The contact is the link between him and the people who wish to join the Iraqi resistance, sources explained.

Abu Alhammam returned to Algeria in March 2005 and informed his friend that, under the order of Al Qaeda, he was responsible for paving the way for Tunisian fighters to join the GSPC fiefdoms with the view of training on arms and explosives and opening a war front against the Tunisian regime. A first part of fighters entered effectively into Algeria and a second part was due later as agreed on. The same sources added.

The authorities have already arrested 10 Tunisians in spring 2005 in Annaba and Algiers. They were ready to become members of the armed organisation. They were subject to investigations and handed over to their country’s authorities.
