The cause behind the sit in was the protesters’ demand for their situation to be regularised by the authorities. The situation was, Sunday evening, characterised by tension in Gue de Constantine, after Kasnaf’s inhabitants had decided to hold a sit in to raise the authorities’ awareness of the necessity of moving them from the current dilapidated houses that were built in the pre-independent era, giving them decent houses, or at least regularise their situation through giving them lots in their quarter, where the number of households is growing from year to year, until it reached 600 households living in circumstances described as catastrophic. The factor that was behind the sit in organised by the inhabitants in front of the commune offices, day and night, is the procrastination in the regularisation of their situation by the different officials that have been into office for the running of the commune, this situation pushed their representatives, who are organised in a quarter association, to chose the option pf protestations, declared a member of this association. The sit in was decided to start from Sunday, where protesters held placards demanding the quick regulation of the situation, and even the insistence of the protesters on that day to meet the mayor, “but our demand was refused”, they said, the thing that pushed them to continue the protestation during the night. At 09:30 p.m., anti riot police encircled the area, and before the confrontation began, protesters were asked to leave, but having refused, clashes were triggered between the police and the protesters, where tens of protesters were injured and four people, from the inhabitants’ representatives, were arrested. They were kept up to yesterday in custody. In an interview with the protesters, one of the quarter association’s members, said “we will not leave the place until our representatives held in police station, are released”, while another added, ”in case they didn’t release them, we may use other methods... ”. Two of the protesters were received, yesterday, by the mayor and a police official, and according to our information from the received protestors, these representatives received promises to meet with the president of the administrative district to discuss the residents’ claims.
