Pointing out at the UN resolution 1495, which stresses the right of the Sahrawi people to decide their destiny through referendum. The joint communiqué issued by the two presidents at the end of Chavez visit to Algeria yesterday, made it clear that Algiers and Caracas back the efforts being made by the UN to resolve the Sahrawi conflict. The statement also included other international issues like the Middle-East crisis, occupation of Iraq and the expected meeting of the non alienated countries in Cuba next September. The official statement, that was published by the Algerian News Agency, mentioned the summit regrouping the Arab countries and Latin America, held in Brazil in May 2005, where “both presidents praised the constitution of the institute for researches on Latin America and an Arab-south American library where these two facilities are considered as tangible bridges between the Arab world and Latin America. And in an implicit hint to the pressures that being experienced by Venezuela from Washington, because of its opposition to the American policies, the communiqué stated that the two presidents agreed on “the importance of multipartite and efficient international policy based on international laws in order to face different threats and challenges that the world is facing in the context of a central role to be left to the UN. Concerning the bilateral cooperation, the official statement said that the two presidents are happy with the level of cooperation in energy field, and agreed on the enhancement of the consultation in the context of OPEC, in preparation for its urgent meeting that will take place in June in Caracas. The communiqué underlined the existence of real opportunities for cooperation and exchange beyond the energy sector, especially in culture, science, technology and environment. H.
