Bouteflika puts France’s apology as a condition Bouteflika puts France’s apology as a condition

Algerian-French friendship treaty
Saturday May 20 2006.

The president of the republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, reiterated his insistence on the fact that the friendship treaty between Algeria and France

is to be signed upon condition that France presents its apologies concerning its colonial crimes, and the president declared Thursday that to ignore this condition and override the awful genocides, perpetrated during French occupation era, are features of arrogant persons and who are suffering memory weaknesses or who are adopting forwards escape.

The president of the republic frankly points out, in an address read by the ministry of the Moudjahidine (Algeria’s independence veterans), Mohammed Cherif Abbas, in Mostaganem on the occasion of student day, to the main causes that lay behind the stumbling of the signature of the Friendship Treaty between Algeria and France, even the fact that the apology condition seems a separate matter from the friendship between Algiers and Paris, but through Bouteflika letter to the French government it is obvious that the friendship is related to a French official apology in relation to the crimes committed against the Algerian people during the whole occupation period. The French state needs to undertake its full historical responsibility if it has real intentions to open a new page.

In the same context, the president of the republic called decision makers on the other side of the sea to revise their widespread views towards Algeria “we are not a naïve nation who ignores its tragedy and gives a blind eye to crimes that have been committed against it, from its identity falsification and heritage destruction“. Bouteflika reminded of the ugliness of massacres of 8 May 1945 that no one is able to ignore its ugliness that no other ugliness can match it in Algeria history, except someone who is arrogant or suffer memory weakness” thus, the prime magistrate added, “amongst the most simple rights of the Algerian people and martyrs rights towards us, are that we demand the apology officially from a nation who held as a slogan for its human revolution liberty, equality and fraternity “

The president sees that if France undertook its historical responsibly according to human logic, than we can start a real friendship, a friendship that is built on reciprocal respect, and equality that can preserve the two people and countries interests without getting into narrow political controversies which will not serve our friendship that comprises more cooperation factors and controversies factors.
