The defence and security sector is considered to be one of the most important sectors offering bribes, estimated at 50% of the volume of all thefts occurring in the world, according to the US Trade Department.

This happens although weapons transactions concluded yearly represent only 1% of the world trade volume. From this view, Mr. Mark Beman, the head of the defence project in International Transparency, said that Algeria as a member in the Euro-Mediterranean Dialogue of the NATO can start discussions on this issue with the partners to face mediators in the region.

International Transparency classed the sector of military industry at the second rank as regards dealing with bribes. International Transparency focuses on the weapons sector as much as the oil and building sectors as well as the public transactions,” the defence official added.

As regards Algeria, the official said that it can start discussions on the issue with the NATO in the Mediterranean region. Estimations about countries weapon acquisitions tackled by Mr. Mark show that Algeria has bought nearly $20 billion within the period between 1976 and 2005.
