Saturday May 20 2006.

The tenth session for the joining of Algeria to the World Trade Organization, according to what the minister of commerce, Hachemi Djaboub, has unveiled before yesterday, will take place next June.

The Algerian delegation negotiator will work to finish all amendments that are to be made on bills, especially the ones with commercial nature, parts of which was recommended by the WTO’s members.

The minister of commerce, throughout the third normal session of the union for Algerian traders and hand workers union in the capital, made it clear that Algerian delegation has done all what has been demanded from to do in relation to bills amendments or annulations.

It is needed to be said that Algeria answered more than 1000 questions concerning the whole legislations and bills that rule the economy, plus few other taken decisions. These new amendments, according to the mister, are bound to allow Algeria to enter the World Trade Organization, after the delay experienced in comparison with other countries, including countries like the ones that have started these negotiations in the same time with Algeria, like Saudi Arabia, especially that the beginning of the negotiations was on 1994. This delay was, according to the minister, due to the difficult decade that Algeria has been through.

On the other part, the minister points out that 2006 will be the year where Algeria would join the World Trade Organization, and this after it has amended most of laws and bills that are now measured by international standards. But many experts are pointing out to the fact that these bills are not enough, especially with the emergence of many persisting problems like brands faking and the black market that are in a collision course with the WTO’s agreements concerning the protection of intellectual rights.
