Amnesty International’s annual report
Wednesday May 24 2006.

In its annual report, issued yesterday, the London-based NGO Amnesty International mentioned harassment and pressure being experienced by journalists in Algeria.

And point out that 18 journalists were sentenced to prison with the accusation of false accusation, and other received pending sentences and substantial fines.

The annual report 2006, published yesterday, in London, mentioned the case of Le Matin daily newspaper’s editor, Mohammed Benchicou, who is incarcerated in El Harrach prison, in Algiers, since 14 June 2004. the report mentioned that Benchkou , and after he has been sentenced by two years on the accusation of illegal currency transfer, was sentenced again in the false accusation in another chain of law suits that are in appealing stage.

The international organisation for amnesty considered tat what has been experienced by journalists who criticised the state leaders of security forces, or talked about human rights..... , have been terrorised while the appeal being underway after they have been liberated last year.

The report criticised the national Chart for peace and reconciliation, and considered it as the enhancement of impunity policy, for it ignores the responsibility of the security forces for the “dangerous crimes” they committed, and give them immunity, which would form an obstacle before the remedy of the previous wounds, it says.
