AU Commissioner for Peace and Security
Thursday Feb 15 2007.

Amb. Said Djinnit Commissioner for Peace and Security of African Union (AU) said yesterday’s bomb blasts in Boumerdes and Tizi-Ouzou, respectively 40 km and 100 km east of Algiers “are inviting everybody in Algeria and African Sahel to be aware”.

“Al-Qaeda represents a real danger for Africa”, he added.

An international conference on “terrorism and religious extremism” opened yesterday at the African Centre for Studies and researches on terrorism, in Muhamadia, east of Algiers, with the attendance of many African experts and researchers. Djinnit told the press, on the sideline of the three-day meeting, African Union had adopted work plan to anticipate and fight on terrorism. “To this purpose, Joint efforts between African countries and their international partners have started” said he in reference to security and intelligence coordination between Arab Maghreb and African Sahel countries, on one hand, and US security apparatus, on the other hand, in order to neutralize al-Qaeda’s branch in the region.

To a question on yesterday’s explosions, east of Algiers, AU Commissioner for Peace and Security says: “I hope these terrorist attacks came as part of final phase of terrorism in Algeria. What happened should invites everybody, in Algeria and the African Sahel, to be aware... more efforts are to be undertaken to be freed from such a burden and religious extremism”.

Mentioning the fact that Salafist Jihadists find it easy to infiltrate the Sahara and African Sahel, Amb. Djinnit says Sub-Saharan region is “flimsy and its inhabitants are poor and can be easily influenced”, adding: “it is necessary to intensify coordination between Algeria and Sahel countries to tighten their grip on terrorism”. And replying to Al-Khabar question on whether the Africans see al-Qaeda organization as a threat, he says “al-Qaeda and all terrorist networks in the world constitutes a real threat for security and peace in Africa and the world”. The speaker raised “Algerian experience in the fight against religious extremism and terrorism” qualifying it as “world-recognized” adding: “that’s why the African Union found Algiers as the most appropriate place to host African Studies Centre on terrorism”.
