Rabat considers Algeria as an essential party in the Sahrawi conflict
Monday Jun 11 2007.

Moroccan authorities have implicitly called Algeria to take part in the direct negotiations, between Rabat and Polisario Front in June 18th, considering it as “an essential party in the conflict”

according to Mr. Nabil Benabdellah communication minister and spokesmen of the Moroccan government.

Moroccan responsible has precised Thursday that Sahrawi crisis has to be treated by concerned parties, and Algeria is one of them”.

In a press conference after the Government Council, the same responsible has answered to a question on president Bouteflika declaration about Sahrawi problem, in which the Algerian president considers this case as an obstacle to the Arab Maghreb achievement, the Moroccan responsible declared that “Morocco has always affirmed that Algeria is concerned with this conflict, and these declarations (Bouteflika’s ones) affirmed that”.

Those declarations intervene in the preparation of negotiations launch in Long Island in the USA; a Moroccan delegation should meet a Sahrawi one in June 18th. A diplomatic source has precised that Algeria “will not take part to negotiations as a direct party because we are not a direct party in the conflict”, adding that “if Algeria attends to the meetings it would be as observers or as neighbours interested in the latest developments”.

It should be noted that the Moroccan delegation will start negotiations benefiting from a valuable American support, thus many American media have reported from David Welsh, in charge of Middle East affairs, that “Moroccan auto determination plan represents a credible and serious proposal”.
